You Should Know: Celebrity Stylist Sade Tavia

While we tend to cover the style of our favorite musicians, actors, and it girls, it’s typically those unsung heroes behind the scenes who truly deserve the shine!
Meet Sade Tavia, stylist to Meek Mill, who has worked with a long roster of stars including Idris Elba, Young Jeezy, Swizz Beatz, TI, and more:

Sade’s first experience in the industry was as an intern at Atlantic records, in the A & R department. She said, “I had just graduated from high school [and] wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. At the time, I was working at Kid Robot [as a sales associate]. I knew I wanted to do something pertaining to fashion and music.”

She continues, “ My Dad had a friend who was working at Atlantic in a completely different department. He suggested I send them my resume. I got an internship at Atlantic, and ended up staying for about 2 years. While there, I reached out to Rosie Philidor who I had met on a project, and began interning with her. When you’re watching the videos, you don’t know the process that goes on behind the scenes. [Working with Rosie] really opened my mind to the industry and how things operated. She taught me the ropes and how things worked in the styling world. [The experience] really confirmed for me that I wanted to style.”

Now you’ll find the Harlem native on video sets or magazine shoots, pulling and curating looks for some of hip hops brightest stars.

For those who want to follow in a similar path, Sade says, “I was always very shy and stand offish, so I’d recommend being bold. Network. Be open to meeting new people. Be nice because you never know who the person you’re talking to is or who they’re going to become. And just work hard. Have a positive attitude. I’ve always given 110% even when I felt that things weren’t going anywhere. Just stick with it. Eventually your purpose will surface.”

When working with celebs, she cautions, “Don’t be too crazy. Be cool. [Stars are] regular people who have a job, just like everyone else, so make the atmosphere as comfortable as possible for them so they’ll want to continue working with you. You’re doing a job together, so act like how you would act with any coworker or any boss. The biggest point: Don’t act like a fan. Celebs don’t want to feel like they’re getting dressed with a fan. Styling is very personal. You’re in close quarters, and you’re spending a lot of time with people alone. So, be comfortable, professional, and cool.”

In closing, she offers aspiring stylists and fashion hopefuls the following words: “Create a plan and knock it out. Intern until you can’t intern anymore, assist until you can’t assist anymore. [A lot] of people look down on interning, but there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s something you do until you figure out what you want to do. My internships were tests of character. They made me think about whether or not I wanted to style because sometimes they were a struggle. [Some may realize they really want it], and some may realize they don’t want it. Figure out if it’s what you want to do. Plan it out, intern, assist, execute, figure out how you’re gonna go to the next level. Stick to it, work hard, and don’t stop until you reach your goal.” Wise words, Sade!

Hot! or Hmm… Jennifer Lopez’s White Lace Dress and Chanel Shoulder Bag

Jennifer Lopez sat by front row at the fashion house’s Spring 2013 show with her adorable daughter and her right hip, Casper Smart. She looked ethereal in a white lace dress with a plunging v-neckline, quilted Chanel shoulder bag, and her favorite Tom Ford Padlock Pumps:

She threw on a black cropped jacket while outside of the venue, taking on Chanel’s signature black and white color palette.

Sigh. It’s pretty impossible to not drool over this woman!

Meet Solange Knowles' Stylist Ogo Offodile of Poodle Pusher...

Solange Knowles has undergone a style evolution in the past few years, adopting more colorful tones, eye catching patterns, and unexpected designs. Though the young Knowles has quite an eye for fashion herself, she’s also benefited from the help of uber styling duo Ogo and Chichi Offodile of Poodle Pusher.
20121003-090529.jpg
Ogo Offodile talks about how the Poodle Pushers got their start, tips for achieving unforgettable looks, and advice on breaking into the styling biz.
20121003-091645.jpg
Ogo says, “Chichi and I are sisters hailing from Nigeria; we come from an extremely large family and vibrant multicultural background [to which] we owe a large portion of our creative influences and strength. Naturally, we both have always had a flare for style and a strong interest in creative expression, so deciding to dabble into fashion styling and creative consulting came as a no-brainer.”
20121003-091748.jpg
“… The difficulty for us unfortunately wasn’t in deciding to start styling, but on how to juggle our “real life” as we call it and following a passion to create. We both have an educational background and master’s degrees in Information Technology and work as full-time employees in the IT corporate world – Chichi as a Technology Consultant and myself as a Network Engineer/Systems Administrator.”
20121003-091918.jpg
“… Although grateful for our positions and for having a great source of income, we still felt a gap creatively and really decided to take it upon ourselves to fill that gap. With no formal training in fashion, our approaches with styling were to self-study and do a tremendous amount of research; get as much on the job experience possible and really start from the ground up. Our initial experiences as fashion stylists began slowly with setting up test photo-shoots on our days off, building our portfolio, and networking. Eventually, persistently working 7 days a week started paying off! We formed a routine, gained momentum, and test shoots turned into styling magazine editorials and ad campaigns, working with fashion houses, and building a strong network.”

So how did they link up with Ms. Solange? Ogo explains, “Our first time working with Solange was on the set of a photo-shoot back in 2010. The styling treatment for the editorial was “African influenced” and we were really excited to deliver a different viewpoint on what African fashion is understood to be.”

She continues, “… We went for looks with African or non-African designers that were adventurous, rich in color and pattern, forward thinking, romantic, and still maintained the aesthetics of the shoot. Solange truly was the perfect muse for the project and a joy to be around on set. She understood where she saw her image going and was able to let us creatively depict that using the concept of the shoot as a canvas.

“I would say it was a perfect mix which led to the relationship extending past the set and to us styling her for [New York Fashion Week] in September 2010. Ever since, we have been on call as a go to stylist for her to bring a reflective yet unconventional perspective.”
Solange is known for her adventurous ensembles, so I had to ask Ogo about their creative process. She says, “When styling clients we believe it should be seamless and a true reflection of their essence; our presence shouldn’t be as apparent. We also approach our styling work from a global perspective and are always on the hunt internationally for designers that speak to us creatively. ”

“…For us styling isn’t just about using the big name brands that constantly deliver beautiful pieces. We also incorporate talented new generation designers from all over the world whose talents are uncanny. At the end of the day, it’s about creating art with clean lines, colors, patterns, textures and a uniqueness we can be proud of. When working with Solange we use this same creative process and she is indeed the perfect client to embrace that. We love that she is versatile, has her own creative ideas and taste, can stand on her own but at the same time allows us to take her to our creative space. It’s a very comfortable process and seeing the end results is always a proud moment.”

So what makes someone stylish? Ogo replies, “[It's] less about being on trend with fashion but more about someone that is confident and a risk taker; marches to their own style beat, and has the ability to own any look. With that you can really convince any skeptic, set trends and get people on board your style roller-coaster.
20121003-094153.jpg
“…A few things every stylista should have in their closet are great accessories and shoes, timeless pieces you will always love, and definitely more separates. You’re more willing to experiment with separates than looks that already come in tact, it also allows for more layering and gives depth to a look.

So any tips for the aspiring stylist? She says, “[A lot of up-and-comers want] to style for the wrong reasons, i.e. fame, perks, or the quick “good life”. Nothing about styling is that glamorous. You truly have to have a knack for it, love what you’re doing, and understand that it’s LOADS of long hours, hard work, and most importantly maintain professionalism. “

“…If this is something you feel passionate about, definitely pursue it and find out more about the relationship you develop with styling. Understand that the fashion industry can be very cut throat at times, so you need to develop thick skin and always keep your goal in close sight.”
20121003-104125.jpg
In closing, she says, “You can do anything you put your mind to. If you can dream it, you can live it. Hard work always pays off. With passion, time and space should feel seamless.”

Wise words that couldn’t have come at a better time.

Show Review: Louis Vuitton Spring 2013

Marc Jacobs packed a punch in his bright, short, and sweet Spring 2013 collection for Louis Vuitton which definitely had an abstract minimalist vibe, juxtaposing bold prints and colors with uncomplicated designs.

Shades of brown and burgundy got their time to shine in various check patterns, combining the shade with white and silver metallic on knee-length pencil skirts, long-sleeve crop tops, and an adorable sweater/shorts combination that read modern “It” girl for sure.

Lemon and kelly green uplifted ladylike suits, long-sleeve knee length dresses (one was sheer for an added dose of sensuality), and gowns that someone like Fan Bingbing or Zoe Saldana might have the guts to rock on the red carpet.

I couldn’t ignore the shoes and handbags from the collection, now could I?
